The Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) works in conjunction with the Orthodontist making patients feel as comfortable as possible, prepare them for treatment, obtain their dental records and instruct patients on post-operative and general oral health care.
Role and Responsibilities
Perform a variety of orthodontic treatment procedures under the direct supervision of the Orthodontist
Set up and breakdown operatory post treatment
Take, develop and mount dental radiographs (x-rays)
Manage infection control - prepare and sterilize instruments and equipment
Adhere to all OSHA and safety policies and procedures
Provide patients with instructions for oral care following all orthodontic treatment procedures
Educate patients on appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health while undergoing orthodontic treatment
Perform various office tasks as necessary
All other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the immediate supervisor
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Dental Assistant Certificate where state regulations specify
RDA License is an absolute requirement where state regulations specify
Dental assisting experience in orthodontics.
X-Ray License
High School Diploma or equivalent
Dentrix experience preferred, but not required.

Educates patients by giving oral hygiene, plaque control, and postoperative instructions.
Documents dental care services by charting in patient records.
Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.
Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
Conserves dental resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
