Resume Types

Whether you’re a recent graduate embarking on your first job in the dental field or a seasoned veteran seeking to refresh your professional profile, maintaining an updated and relevant resume is paramount.

Did you know that you have three distinct resume formats to consider? These formats- chronological, functional, and combination- offer diverse approaches tailored to your work history and experience. The selection among them depends on what best suits your professional background, ensuring that your skills and expertise are efficiently highlighted.

We’ll cover the nuances of these three resume types, guiding you in making an informed choice that aligns seamlessly with your unique career trajectory.

The Chronological Resume

The most commonly used format, and the one you may be most familiar with, is the Chronological Resume. This type is a good choice if you have a consistent work history and few gaps in your employment. A chronological resume lists your professional experience in reverse-chronological order, beginning with your most recent position and continuing in a descending order. It prioritizes your relevant professional experience and achievements.

The Chronological resume works best for job seekers who:

● Want to showcase a steady employment history

● Are looking for a position that matches or logically progresses from previous jobs

● Are seeking a conventional position

The Functional Resume

A Functional Resume focuses on highlighting the skills and qualifications of the candidate rather than emphasizing the chronological work history. It groups a candidate’s experience under skills or categories of skills. This allows employers to focus on the candidate’s qualifications such as any technical or soft skills required for the job. Functional Resumes are particularly useful for individuals who may have employment gaps, are changing careers, or have a diverse skills set that doesn’t follow a traditional career path.

The Functional Resume works well if you:

● Have worked many different jobs or posses diverse skills

● Have skills that relate to the position, but not a lot of previous work experience in the field.

● Have gaps in employment history, are a recent graduate or are changing careers

● Are a mature worker and want to de-emphasize your age

The Combination Resume

As its name suggests, the Combination Resume combines aspects of the chronological resume and the functional resume. Like the chronological format, the Combination Resume details your work experience, highlighting major responsibilities and achievements. Like a functional resume, it also prominently displays valuable skills. It’s particularly useful for individuals who want to showcase a strong skills set while providing a chronological overview of their work experience.

This format works well for job seekers who:

● May have obtained the required skills from seemingly unrelated industries or jobs

● Are trying to change careers and want to emphasize transferable skills

● Have had a steady work history

Whether you opt to highlight your consistent work history through the Chronological Resume, seek to address gaps with the Functional Resume, or aim to showcase both skills and work history with the Combination Resume, view this decision not merely as a formatting choice but as an opportunity to narrate your professional journey in a compelling manner.

Your resume is not merely a document but a powerful tool opening doors and inviting others to appreciate the value you bring to the dental profession. Choose wisely, craft thoughtfully, and let your resume be a testament to your commitment, expertise, and passion for making a difference in the world of dentistry.
