Job Summary
Performs chair side assistance and related duties in all phases of restorative, prosthodontic, surgical, endodontic, interceptive orthodontic and periodontal treatment as provided in general dentistry.
Essential Functions
Prepares un'ina, sterilizes and disinfects instruments, sets up trays, prepares materials, and assists dentist during dental procedures.
Receives, reassures, and routes patients (un'inas) for treatment in DWC Dental.
Lays out all instruments and materials needed for each treatment properly; prepares un'ina operatory.
Assists dentist in all phases of general dentistry, utilizing techniques for four handed sit-down dentistry.
Passes instruments and materials to the dentist.
Keeps intra-oral area of operation clear using high-speed evacuator, suction tip and irrigation; retracts tissue, tongue and cheek.
Aids the dentist in calming fearful un'inas and if necessary, controlling un'ina movements. Alert to the condition of un'ina during treatment for signs of fainting, shock or other distress.
Operates dental x-ray equipment to take digital and panograph radiographs.
Performs intra-oral procedures as directed by dentist.
Takes preliminary impressions for study models.
Pours and trims models from impressions, constructs mouth guards and bleaching trays, and places and removes rubber dams.
Administers fluoride treatments and sealants.
Relays dentist's instruction to un'ina for post-treatment care. Instructs un'ina on brushing and flossing techniques.
Records medical history of un'inas; documents the examination and treatment information relayed by dentist.
Routes un'inas for medical tests and services when required.
Cleans and sterilizes materials, instruments and equipment including and preparing sterile trays for chair side use.
Maintains operatories in neat and orderly fashion and within standards for clean dental procedures.
Observes appropriate infection control measures pre-and post-operatively.
Provides exceptional customer service.
Receives un'inas to the department in a friendly, professional and courteous manner.
Answers phones and direct calls to appropriate staff members of the department. Takes messages as required.
Determines which can be handled by staff members and which need management. Personally responds to non-technical questions regarding department.
Assists un'inas by providing accurate information that meets the un'inas' needs the first time.
Adhere to the Tribe's policies and procedures.

Essential Functions:
Provides direct patient care to dental patients of the Interior Community Health Center.
Supervises, in conjunction with the Dental Director, dental assistants.
Coordinates services with clinic and community providers to ensure delivery of comprehensive dental care services.
Coordinates with Center’s and community’s providers to ensure delivery of integrated multidisciplinary comprehensive primary care services.

Assists with the center’s dental procedures and systems to assure compliance with federal laws, regulations and standards of practice, including, dental policies and procedures, OSHA, CLIA, patient care, employee health, coding and billing.
Remains current with standards of practice.
Participates in community meetings.
Participates in development of written collaborative and memorandums of agreement for Center’s and patient services.
Complies with corporation’s policies and procedures.
Utilizes personal computer.

Perform office management tasks that often require the use of computer.
Perform Fluoride treatment, to include trays, Fluoride varnish, and rinses.
Provide oral hygiene instruction for adult and pediatric patients.
Perform coronal polishing under the supervision of a dentist or dental hygienist.

Take, pour, trim, and construct devices from dental impressions.

Bethel is a rural town in the western part of Alaska that operates as the logistical hub of the much wider area called the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. People from many of the surrounding villages must travel to or through Bethel for their healthcare needs. A dentist at Bethel Family Clinic is responsible for providing high-quality, comprehensive dental care with a professional attitude and a willingness to help those in need. Bethel Family Clinic is a qualified work site for student load repayment programs such as NHSC and Alaska SHARP program.
Position Requirements:
Education: Successful completion of DDS or DMD degree program from a school accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation
Experience: At least 1 year of work experience preferred. Proficiency in endodontic treatment preferred.
Licenses, Certifications: Must be licensed and in good standing with the State of Alaska Board of Dentistry. Current BLS certification. Current DEA registration.
Specialized Skills: Good interpersonal, communication, and computer skills. Ability to work independently and problem solve
Physical Requirements: Must have good manual dexterity and ability to repeatedly work with hands and fingers on a daily basis; able to sit for extended periods while working with patients; able to bend and/or twist body.
Position Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Diagnose, treatment plan, and provide appropriate treatment to patients, including preventive, restorative, surgical, endodontic, periodontal, and prosthodontic treatment modalities
Provide patient education on oral health
Train the dental assistants and perform yearly competency tests on them in conjunction with the office manager. These competency tests will be filed in their HR file with their annual Performance Evaluation (done by the Office Manager).
Complete performance evaluations on the dental hygienist.
Communicate with the dental staff regarding patient treatment plans
Prescribe medications as necessary
Careful documentation of all medications, diagnoses, treatments, and consultations in electronic dental record
Demonstrate excellent communication skills and professional demeanor.
Write appropriate referrals to outside providers when indicated.
Supervisory:
Supervision of the work including all professional, technical and administrative dental staff. Organizational flow is as follows: Dentist – Dental Hygienist and Office Manager – Assistants will be directly supervised by the Office Manager.
